Ramona Smart is an extraordinary mompreneur! She successfully owns and runs Smart Insurance Agency in Woodland Hills, CA. Ramona has worked in the insurance industry for 7 years and she has been an agent for 6 years. The most significant part of being in insurance is understanding how important your role plays in a family’s life. Therefore, her business is extremely fulfilling and enables her to live the life that she creates.
We were given the opportunity to ask Ramona about her success both in business and personally.
Here is what Ramona said:
“I was introduced to the insurance industry by a woman that had been an agent for over 20 years. She was doing very well and loved what she was doing. I was also inspired by a gentleman that warned me about how hard it would be to start my own business. He encouraged me when I struggled and reminded me how important my job was to people who trusted me to take care of them when things were at their worst. He showed me how this business, when done right, could provide a great lifestyle for my family.
The most important part of being in this industry is to understand how integral you are to protecting a family’s financial future and stability. An agent must take great care to educate themselves to ensure they are properly advising their clients and truly protecting them from peril. You have to really care.
I really enjoy educating my clients and knowing that they leave my office more informed than when they walked in. The hardest part of owning your own business is staffing. Not everyone can deal with the rigor of this business and finding the right people is often a hit or miss. A small business can be significantly affected (good or bad) by each and every person that works there.
I was raised by parents that have always owned their own businesses, which is probably why I have always had a very independent and entrepreneurial spirit. I grew up helping my parents in their respective business and it just seemed normal to me. I am very grateful to them for that experience and the confidence to take my success into my own hands.
My one piece of advice for new business owners is that it is going to be hard, but if you put systems in place, do the right things consistently and continue to learn about yourself and your business….success is yours.
Outside of business, I really enjoy working out, reading and spending time with girlfriends. My girlfriend time is super important to me. I try to schedule a lunch or dinner with a girlfriend at least every other week. It really recharges my battery and lets me know I have sisters in the trenches with me.
My family, my husband and son, is quite active and a fun day always includes the outdoors whether that is the beach, a hike with amazing views, a long run or just playing at the park. We are happy either way. The fact that we can do these things almost any day of the year is part of the perks of living in California.”
Ramona is known in the community to give back as well. She has served on the board for the Los Angeles Urban League of Young Professionals. She is currently on the board for The Magic Penny and the Young Realtist League of Los Angeles, NAREB. In addition, she organized a “Thank America’s Teacher Campaign” where she asked Facebook followers to nominate a favorite teacher and each week she selected one to give $100 in school supplies. This year, she is working with Crenshaw High School in a similar fashion. Ramona also mentors her fellow mompreneurs as a way of giving back.
Ramona’s story is quite inspiring which explains why she has won multiple Farmers Insurance related awards for performance. With the right motivation, mentorship and support system in place, Ramona is a true testament of how a woman with a lot of heart for her clients, community and family can excel.
